I love cold weather. It’s a fact. Many of you out there won’t understand this concept, and will be firm summer believers, fooled into thinking it’s the season you should dream about. But I know different. And as the weather is changing here in Queenstown, from the long, drawn out, hot summer days, to the fresh, crisp mornings and snow capped mountains, I can’t help but smile as I walk out of the house and into the winter. This is what it’s all about.
Now don’t get me wrong, when we first came to Queenstown in November and spring was turning into summer, I appreciated the beauty of this lake side town, and embraced all there was to do. I went hiking, biking (granted only twice, but it counts), swimming in the freezing cold water, camping, and generally spent my time adventuring around in abundance. And I enjoyed it! But I would swap all of that for what’s about to come.
There’s been a change, even in the people who you see around town; the winter children are arriving and the biking community are making their way back over to Europe to continue their summers and what I can only describe as an unreasonable love for tinkering with bikes. Hoodies, beanies, plaid shirts, boots, beards, un-groomed hair, and the lingering smell of après in the air. The real season is upon us – and the nearer it gets the more I fall in love with Queenstown.
And who wouldn’t? With mountains that glow in the sun, and the excitement of waking up in the morning to find out it’s snowed again; winter is the season for hearts which are yet to have fully forgotten what it is to be as excited as a kid at Christmas. Yes, winter has arrived – and boy do I like it.
