In the mountains the weather can be unpredictable to say the least. It can change at only a moments notice, from a glorious sunny day, to a torrential thundery downpour - before you even have time to fish out the pac-a-mac that's been shoved to the back of the wardrobe after weeks of dry weather.
A few evenings ago, having a night off from work, the plan was to go camping up a local mountain with friends. The sun had been out in force all day, the heat was almost unbearable. We had great plans; drive half way, hike the rest, set up camp and wake up for sunrise on top of a mountain - would have been pretty rad! Until the changing weather. 5 o’clock comes around and there in the background between two mountains, dark skies and heavy clouds were gathering. The real clincher though was when that low rumble of thunder rolled in... Clearly we picked the best night for a camping trip!
It is safe to say that all camping plans were aborted, and it’s lucky because the lightning that evening turned the skies a glowing purple when it struck, and the rain hammered on down until the early hours of the morning.
However, through all of this, with the bodged plans gone wrong, it made me realise something. Sometimes, you need a little rain in your life, to truly appreciate the sunshine.
